Out of bed to water horses, slop hogs, feed chickens, milk cows. Fix hot breakfast for her family (usually soup with meat).

Light fires in the Big House and outbuildings |

Awaken the planter’s family just before dawn. |

6 AM |
Ring the plantation bell at sunrise. Say common prayers with planter and all workers in front of the Big House. |

7 AM |
Receive daily work orders from her mistress. The head cook, head maid and seamstress receive keys to pantry and storehouses. These three supervise all household labor. Dress the planter’s children and lead them in prayer. |

8 AM |
Daily clean-up chores get underway. Some women tend to infant and toddlers of both planters and workers, including morning breastfeeding duties. |

10 AM |
Mid-morning inspection by mistress and head slaves. |
|
12 Noon |
Lunch served to planter’s family. Separate kitchen staff prepares and serves communal lunch to workers. |

1 PM |
Wash clothes and bathe children in the River. |
|
2 PM |
Tend to planter’s children as they nap, while sewing/mending. |

3 PM |
Group visits with children to mistress to show handiwork. |
|
4 PM |
Clean guest rooms and make preparations for business visitors. |
|
5 PM |
Accompany planter’s children on visits beyond the Big House or with daily gardening chores. |

6 PM |
Meet with planter, mistress and all workers at the front of the Big House for evening prayers. |
|
7 PM |
Serve dinner for the planter’s family. Return keys to mistress. |
|
8 PM |
Return to slave quarters to cook meal for her family (usually a 1-pot meal). |
|
9 PM |
Tend to home garden, wash and mend clothes, usually at a communal cabin. |
|
10 PM |
Mammies, wet nurses, return to the Big House to sleep (on floor) next to children. |

Lights out. |
